Nick is a Pilot and Conservation Officer protecting the last “Big Tusker” elephants in Tsavo National Park from illegal hunting.  


**Passion for flying**
I’ve spent most of my childhood in Tsavo, getting to know the areas and the varied wildlife before finding my passion for flying. Today I work for the Tsavo Trust as their main pilot, flying small Super Cub aircrafts over conservation areas to look after Tsavos wildlife.

**The last of its kind**
African elephants are referred to as "Tuskers" when their tusks grow so long that they reach the ground. The last remaining "Tuskers" live in Tsavo National Park, and they are at constant risk of being killed by ivory poachers who use brutal methods to get hold of their tusks. If we don't protect these large elephants, they and their gene pool will soon be gone forever. This will have huge effects on the ecosystem since elephants, when roaming freely, help make the vegetation flourish, influencing the food supply for all animals.

**Eye in the sky**
I carry out the monitoring of the elephants in Tsavo by flying a small airplane. In such a vast, remote place as Tsavo, airplanes are a vital conservation tool, providing an additional 'eye in the sky'. As well as contributing to scientific data, the reports transmitted from Tsavo Trust's aircraft can assist Kenya Wildlife Services in mounting an appropriate response to any identified threats to Tsavo's elephants.

Only 25 “Big Tusker” elephants remain in the world and they are currently being hunted for their ivory. Nick is a pilot who protects these elephants from illegal hunters by flying over their habitat in Tsavo, Kenya.
