Future Energy Ventures Approach to Net-Zero

At Future Energy Ventures we are convinced a portfolio approach to solutions is key to mitigating climate change. We need to scale existing climate solutions faster, and we need to support innovation of new solutions at the very earliest stages. The Future Energy Ventures Fund is an SFDR Article 9 Venture Capital fund and invests in climate tech start-ups and scale-ups which already are in the commercialization stage. In addition, the Future Energy Ventures team is committed to reducing its operational footprint, and supported by the Milkywire Climate Transformation Fund, to making contributions to innovative, catalytic climate projects that accelerate progress towards global net-zero goals.

Maximising long-term CO₂ impact

Since 2021, we have been measuring and offsetting our own GHG emissions, and since 2022 we have had in place an internal carbon fee of $100/ton for our Scope 1, 2 and business travel (scope 3), and $10/ton for our remaining scope 3. Instead of offsetting via carbon credits, we have made contributions equal to the internal fee to the Milkywire Climate Transformation Fund. This fund's overall goal is to maximise long-term CO2 reduction or removal per dollar spent. We are moving beyond offsetting because we believe our carbon compensation should be about more than our own “neutrality”, and rather aimed at creating maximum such positive impact. Our hope is that this donation will contribute far beyond the Future Energy Ventures footprint.

Remove

Netherlands

Remove is a non-profit accelerator supporting early-stage carbon removal startups. By expanding their global reach, particularly in underrepresented regions, they catalyze local innovation, ecosystem growth, job creation, and broader carbon removal market development. In this project we are funding their expansion into new geographies.

Opportunity Green

United Kingdom

Opportunity Green is working to end the exemption of international flights from the EU Emissions Trading System, which leaves more than 80 MtCO₂ unregulated each year. Through legal interventions, policy briefs, and alliances with innovative aviation companies, the initiative builds the case that including long-haul aviation is essential for EU climate integrity and competitiveness. The strategy also leverages Ireland’s upcoming EU Council Presidency and support from climate vulnerable countries to secure reform. Bringing international aviation into the ETS would close a major gap in EU climate policy and generate significant revenues for climate action.

Climate Justice Standard

Ecuador

The Kawsay Ñampi project, led by the Kichwa People of Sarayaku in the Ecuadorian Amazon, protects 142,500 hectares of intact rainforest through Indigenous governance and modern monitoring tools. The project is developed under the Climate Justice Standard, which ensures that the project channels most funds directly to community priorities while piloting an ethical, non-offset Climate Justice Contribution model. It offers a replicable pathway for Indigenous-led, high-integrity climate and biodiversity solutions.
