Shaha is Project Manager for BLUE’s Maldives project. She works to protect coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds to increase biodiversity and provide the Maldives with greater resilience from the effects of climate change.
Shaha can expand marine protected areas in the Maldives and restore coral reefs for the benefit of the people that depend on them.

The Maldives is heavily threatened by climate change. With an economy that relies on the fishing industry, the country requires plentiful fish breeding grounds and vast biodiversity for survival. Yet with only 1 % of their waters protected, the marine ecosystems are being degraded by overfishing, unsustainable tourism and coastal development.
Shaha is the Project Manager for BLUE’s Maldives project.
She works to maintain natural coastal protection for Maldivian islands through the protection of coral reefs, mangroves and seagrasses.
Securing protection and monitoring of critical habitats such as fish feeding and breeding grounds within marine protected areas.
Works with local stakeholders like hotels and resorts to ensure that they practice their operations sustainably.
Educate local fishermen and younger people about the importance of marine protection.
Ensure Maldivian fishermen benefit from selling locally caught sustainable seafood.
Encouraged more than a quarter of the resorts in the Maldives to stop removing seagrasses around their resort islands and protect more than 830,000 m2 of them.
Developed a sustainable reef fisheries model for Six Senses Laamu, a luxury resort in Laamu Atoll, which incentivizes local fishermen to fish sustainably on coral reefs. BLUE is now rolling this out across other resorts.
Secured a commitment for five marine and coastal protected areas from the local government in an atoll in the south called Laamu Atoll.
Shaha and BLUE’s Maldives project has collected data and conducted research on coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds to streamline their conservation efforts.
Shaha is on a mission to ensure the future of the Maldives by working with local stakeholders to protect the marine ecosystems of the islands.
