Why care

Cayman Islands’ mangroves have decreased by 60% in the past 50 years. This is deeply problematic as mangroves protect coastal people and communities from being swept away by the ocean, as well as act as carbon sinks, storing carbon and easing the effects of global warming.

The work

Haileigh is a coordinator for the Cayman Island Mangrove Rangers. Her work includes:

  • Collaborating with other mangrove rangers to monitor the ecological health of mangrove ecosystems on the Cayman Islands.

  • Working with locals and volunteers with the aim to highlight the true value of mangrove ecosystems and their importance in sustaining the islands.

  • Running the Junior Mangrove Rangers’ Program for local kids to get involved in mangrove conservation.
